DeBakey Orchestras
Lyric I String Orchestra
Our beginner string orchestra for students wishing to learn a string instrument for the first time, topics include instrumental technique, notation and first-time concert performances. Students in Lyric I do not need to audition for placement, they are either returning to their string instrument after a long break, or wishing to learn a new string orchestra instrument.
Lyric II Full Orchestra
Our new full orchestra for students with one or more years of experience in band and orchestra, offering students a practical approach to first-time full orchestral musicianship. Concepts begin to push students beyond basic level technique, incorporating fundamental ensemble skills such as full ensemble sight-reading, listening skills, and broadening the scope of the repertoire experience. Students will continue to explore and refine their understanding of rhythm, melody, notation, critical thinking and response, and audience engagement and etiquette.
Philharmonic Full Orchestra
Symphony Full Orchestra
Students working on intermediate through advanced ensemble musicianship skills, UIL Non-Varsity level sight-reading and repertoire, orchestral classics, pop music, full ensemble method books and preparing students for larger works of growing musical complexity. Concepts are further developed in the areas of intermediate notation and literacy skills, rhythm, melody and harmony, critical thinking and response, and challenge the students growth as a maturing high school musician.
The premier performing ensemble at DeBakey High School for Health Professions. Made up of advanced string players, wind players and percussionists, these students continually strive for excellence in individual musicianship through contests, private lessons, outside performance opportunities, and represent the highest standard of excellence within the DeBakey Music Program. The repertoire is largely drawn from standard orchestral classics, Varsity level UIL sight-reading and contest music, and any and all available orchestral literature. Students strive for mastery in the areas of advanced notation and literacy skills, rhythm, melody, harmony, and critical thinking and response.
Honors
Honors Students are required to prepare the TMEA All-Region excerpts in the fall and audition, complete a research project each semester, and attend two professional concerts each semester with a 2-page written reflection. UIL Solo and Ensemble, and TSSEC, The Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest are optional; however, it is highly encouraged as it develops individual musicianship and gives you an opportunity for adjudication by a professional on your instrument. Modifications allowed at Director’s discretion.
